The Sunnyhill Interweave group has partnered with Bower Hill Community Church to present an LGBTQ speaker series. To help us fulfill the requirements of the Welcoming Congregation Renewal process, please plan to attend these no-charge events. All events will be held at Bower Hill Community Church, 70 Moffett St, Pittsburgh, PA 15243 and are open to the public. Direct questions to BK Kosmach.
Recent surveys reveal that seven out of ten people say they know someone who is lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, or queer (LGBTQ). The national group Parents, Friends and Families of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG) reports that one out of four families has an LGBTQ member. And now, more than at any time in our nation’s history, LGBTQ issues are consistently in the news.
There has been a lot of debate on these issues, but maybe not a lot of compassionate conversation. We know there has been plenty of negative information but little useful information — especially on the subject of LGBTQ and spirituality. Many questions arise, Including: What happens when an LGBTQ individual seeks a place to worship and is rejected by the congregation? How welcoming have churches been to LGBTQ congregants?
The program offers basic information about the LGBTQ community, vocabulary and definitions, an examination of gender and sexual orientation, a look at health disparities in the community, spirituality, welcoming, and a brief discussion of legal issues.
