Religious Education Purpose and Mission

The purpose of the Unitarian Universalist Church of the South Hills Religious Education Program is to provide:
• A community where children feel love, acceptance, and belonging
• A religious and moral foundation for honoring life’s joys and tragedies
• A knowledge of Unitarian Universalism and world religions
• A recognition of our social responsibility to the greater world community and our planet
• Opportunities and resources for personal growth

The mission of the religious education program:

To create an affirming atmosphere that fosters personal growth and learning of UU values in an interdependent community.

RE is much more than classroom instruction

  • Preschoolers learn about kindness through song
  • 2nd graders listen to and discuss a story about loss and bereavement
  • 5th graders ask questions of classroom guests, such as a Muslim couple invited to talk about Islam
  • 7th graders learn about personal responsibility in a lesson from OWL, a progressive sexuality education program
  • 8th graders in the Coming of Age program meet with adult mentors and plan visits to synagogues, mosques, and temples
  • High-school youth design a fundraiser to support a local homeless shelter.
