September 2022
As part of the Academy Concert series, the Academy Quartet performs “Variations on Variations” on September 16 at 7:30 p.m. “Theme and variations” is a favorite musical style for composers and audiences alike, balancing novelty and familiarity to delight both the ear and the mind. This evening’s performance dives into the riches of the string quartet repertoire-drawing on original melodies, folk songs, and pop tunes. Joseph Haydn, “the father of the string quartet,” takes the spotlight with glorious variation movements, including variations on the Austrian national anthem – which also serves as the alma mater for the University of Pittsburgh. Selections include “Variations on a Russian Folk Song” (various composers); “String Quartet in C, Op. 76 #3” (Joseph Haydn); Stylistic Variations on “Smoke on the Water” (arr. Kenneth Abeling); and “String Quartet in D, Op. 20 #5” (Haydn).
Members of the Quartet include violinists Jorie Butler-Geyer and Leah Givelber; violinist/violist Warren Davidson; and cellist Robin Hasenpflug.
