RE Classes for Children 2011-2012

9:00 Service

Nursery: This is appropriate for young children who are able to crawl up to children 3-4 years old.

Preschool - 2nd grade: This class is using "Backyard to the Universe: Dr. Seuss and UUs" by Rev. Helen Zidowecki. In the words of Rev. Zidowecki "these stories are fun and engaging. But even more important, they are based on life situations and experiences and give us a way to reflect, to talk about things that are a part of our lives, such as: we all sleep, we all get lost, we all are afraid sometimes, we all meet people who are on-and sometimes in-our way, we all like adventure in various ways and we all struggle with what is right and what is not."

3rd - 5th grade: The curriculum for this class is "Windows and Mirrors" which is from the Tapestry of Faith Program, written by Gabrielle Farrell, Natalie Fenimore, and Dr. Jenice View. Windows and Mirrors nurtures children's ability to identify their own experiences and perspectives and to seek out, care about and respect those of others. The sessions unpack topics that end themselves to diverse experiences and perspectives-for example, faith heritage, public service, anti-racism and prayer. The program teaches that there are always multiple viewpoints and everyone's viewpoint matters.

6th - 8th grade: "Riddle and Mystery", also from the Tapestry of Faith Program, written by Richard S. Kimball. Each of the lessons introduces and processes a Big Question such as Where do we come from? What are we? Where are we going? Does God exist" and What happens when you die? This curriculum does not try to answer these questions, but rather gives reflective, generous responses that will help all seekers to their own understanding with the philosophical and theological frameworks expressed in the UU Principles and Sources.

Nursery: This is appropriate for young children who are able to crawl up to children 3-4 years old.

Youth Group: 9th - 12th grade: The Youth Group is using the curriculum "A Place of Wholeness" by Beth Dana and Jesse Jaeger, also from the Tapestry of Faith Program. For many youth, especially those raised in Unitarian Universalist communities, the principles, values, and theologies of Unitarian Universalism are in their bones. A Place of Wholeness is an opportunity to examine their faith journeys to better understand themselves in the context of Unitarian Universalism. Every workshop begins with the same opening reading, the last lines of which are: "We are part of this living tradition. Through it we become whole, and through us it becomes whole." It is this sense of interdependence that the program reinforces.

This vibrant program for grades 9 - 12 has a number of components: education, community service, leadership skills, spiritual growth and development and social activities. Youth activities during the year will include participation in local, cluster and district Unitarian Universalist Youth-Adult Committee (YAC) functions, overnights (AKA "lock-ins"), socials at church and the opportunity to participate in community service projects.

The Youth Group sponsors an Italian Dinner put on by youth members and their adult helpers. Check the RE calendar and plan to join us for this evening of fun and great food when our church is turned into an Italian Bistro.

The Youth also lead a church service for the congregation in late spring. This service includes the "Bridging" ceremony for graduating high school seniors. Check the RE calendar for the exact date.

Our Whole Lives - OWL

Our Whole Lives (OWL), a sexuality education program, is offered to children in grades 4-6 and grades 7-9 in separate classes. OWL will be offered again in 2012/2013.
